In the movie Forrest Gump he describes the rain in Vietnam: “We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin’ rain, and big ol’ fat rain, rain that flew in sideways and sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath…” That quote best describes a series of thunderstorms that passed through Southeast Missouri’s Lake Wappapello area on Sunday during the June 23rd Anglers’ Choice event. While most of the day the weather cooperated with the anglers, a couple of storms forced even the most ardent competitors to seek shelter. Strong winds, heavy rain and frequent lightening are not conducive to bass tournaments and anglers reported taking at least one “break” during the day while the storms made their way through the area. Another system slammed the area just before weigh-in. That system apparently produced a tornado, that caused damage as it made its way east.

Tornados not-with-standing everyone made it to weigh-in safely and it proved to be a productive day for most of the field. Large numbers of “keeper” bass were reported by many of the anglers. Topping the field was Jamie Toon and Brian House with a five fish limit that weighed 19.3 pounds and earned them $1620 plus trophies. “We caught fish pretty much all day,” said House. “It was just one of those days you dream about. Both of us caught a bunch of fish and except for the weather it was a fun day.” He added. “We stayed up river all day,” said Toon. “Our fish were in about 4 to 5 feet of water and we got them fishing slow moving baits.”

Second place went to Randy Pierce and Keith Carroll. They had a limit of fish at 16.18 pounds and earned $1330 plus trophies. “We caught them on crankbaits and big worms all day,” said Carroll. “WE stayed on the lower end of the lake all day and fished in 8 to 12 feet of water,” he added. The second place team also weighed in the big bass of the event. It weighed 5.65 pounds and earned them an additional $310 plus trophies.

Terry Young and long-time partner Terry Holmes took third place honors with a limit of fish weighing 13.78 pounds. “We were up river fishing the edge of the channel. We got one fish early on a top-water and caught two on a jig and two on a worm,” said Young. We were fishing in 4 to 8 feet of water. They took home $585.

Don Lynn and Larry Thurman took fourth place with a limit weighing13.72 pounds and was good for $360.

Steve Hardin and Steve Seiter finished in the last paying spot with five fish that tipped the scales at 12.99 pounds and was worth $215.

Big Bass for the event was fooled by a crankbait and earned Randy Pierce and Keith Carroll $310 plus trophies.

The next Wappapello Anglers’ Choice event will be July 14.
